Breeding Quality - We are dedicated to breeding high-quality Svart Hona that reflect the best traits of this unique and hardy landrace breed. While there is no official Standard of Perfection (SOP), we strive to maintain the traditional characteristics that set Svarts apart while promoting utility and resilience. Breeding quality birds will have solid black feathering with no white leakage, spotting, or white toenails. Roosters display large upright combs, a striking blue-green sheen, and full, well-structured feathering. Some may show slight mulberry tones in comb and wattles, which is natural variation within the breed. Svarts have a balanced, slightly wider body type with moderate depth and a functional build. Unlike Ayam Cemani, they should not appear gamey or overly upright. We breed for birds with a steady, confident carriage and lower wing set.
 
Pet/Cross Quality birds many have leakage or white spots, smaller or floppy combs, a high amount of mulberry in the combs, lower quality feathering, or undesirable conformations. They are good for fibro-cross projects.
 
My personal favorite, our very rare Svart Hona chickens are striking, all-black birds known for their sleek feathers, dark combs, and fibromelanistic traits that extend to their skin, muscles, and even bones. Hardy and self-sufficient, they are excellent foragers and adapt well to various climates. At 20 weeks old, they are nearing maturity, with pullets beginning to lay small to medium cream-colored eggs in the coming weeks. Roosters develop a regal, upright stance with long, flowing tail feathers. With their unique appearance and hardy nature, Svart Honas make a captivating addition to any flock. Svarts are intelligent chickens with a calm demeanor. Hens tend to be very broody.
